DARLINGTON - The Redbirds won its own invitational, Saturday, topping Shullsburg in three games for the championship.

A year ago, Darlington lost to New Glarus in the championship.

"It was an evenly matched field. Everyone got a lot out of it," Darlington head coach Jen Schwartz said.

In Pool A, Darlington finished 4-2 overall, tied with East Dubuque, New Glarus was 3-3 and Argyle was 1-5. In Pool B, Shullsburg swept the field, finishing 6-0. Barneveld was 3-3, Benton 2-4, and Darlington's junior varsity team, which filled in for Pecatonica, was 1-5.

"We split the pools up. Some of the teams are in the same conference and we didn't want them to play each other any more than they really needed to," Schwartz said.

In the semifinals, Darlington knocked off Barneveld, 25-12, 26-24, and Shullsburg held off East Dubuque, 25-22, 27-25.

Darlington needed three games to fend off Shullsburg in the finals, 25-10, 24-26, 25-22.

"We played really well," Schwartz said. "Elizabeth Mathias was great. She dominated the net and came up with some big blocks for us when we needed them."

The Redbirds coach was also pleased by the play of Chayse Hermanson and Carley McDonald.

"Chayse moved to setter from libero for us, and she played really well. Carley led our team in kills and did very well at the service line," Schwartz said.
