MONROE - The Darlington boys basketball team ran to a 72-62 win over New Glarus in the championship of the Monroe Summer League on Thursday.
Darlington was led by Will Schwartz who scored a team-high 15 points in the title game. Teammate Brayden McDonald added 11 points. With the win, Darlington capped an unbeaten summer league (8-0).
"They (Darlington) will probably get some preseason recognition," Monroe boys basketball coach Pat Murphy said, referring to the high school season. "They have had a heck of a summer."
New Glarus was led by Trey Taylor who scored a game-high 18 points. With the loss, New Glarus (6-2) finished second place in the summer league.
New Glarus knocked off Monroe White 53-47 in a semifinal game. Taylor scored a team-high 22 points to lead New Glarus. Teammate Jaden Kreklow added 18 points for New Glarus. Darlington reached the final by beating Mineral Point 56-40.
Monroe was led by junior Alex Tordoff who scored a game-high 23 points. New Glarus closed the game with an 8-2 run.
Monroe had two varsity summer teams. The Monroe White team finished 5-2 in league play.
In the junior varsity league, the Monroe White team beat Monroe Red 53-40 for the team title.
In the seventh- and eighth-grade division, Lena-Winslow defeated Beloit Turner 41-30 in the championship game.
"The goal is for everyone to get better," Murphy said. "You want to provide opportunities for kids and they have to take advantage of them. Playing with two teams in the summer helps with leadership roles."
