DARLINGTON - For the first time since Cuba City joined the Southwest Activities League in 2003, the Darlington volleyball team swept a match from the Cubans on Monday in a rescheduled showdown.

It marks the second time Darlington (12-4, 5-3 SWAL) has beaten Cuba City this season. Before this year, Cuba City had topped the Redbirds in 28 straight sets.

"Before this year we have not beat Cuba City in a game or match," Darlington coach Jen Schwartz said. "I think we have come a long way since the first week. I was a little worried about a Monday match against Cuba City and trying to keep pace in the conference. They played together and worked together the best I have seen them work."

The Redbirds are just one win back from Cuba City in the hunt for a league championship.

Darlington junior Kennedy Rankin had a team-high nine kills and her senior sister Taryn Rankin had eight kills to spark the Redbirds. Senior setter Callie Norton racked up 13 assists and junior Gabrielle Steiner notched five aces. Senior teammate Taylor Jacobson had two blocks and junior Chelsie Golackson added five digs.
