RIVERDALE - Darlington senior Cassidy Cox delivered a two-run single in the sixth inning to spark the Redbirds to a comeback 6-5 win over Riverdale Monday, May 6.

Darlington (6-7, 4-6 SWAL) has lost four games by one run in the last inning this season.

"It wasn't a pretty game," Darlington coach Karen Bennett said. "A win is a win. It's good to finish it."

Darlington's Chloe Hinderman led off the sixth with a single. Jacke Johnson then doubled. That set the stage for Cox to deliver the go-ahead hit.

Johnson and Cox were each 2-for-3 with a double. Cox had two RBI. Hinderman went 2-for-3, and Brianna King was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Darlington junior Jena Foulker pitched a complete game and gave up five runs on eight hits. She struck out seven and walked two.

The Redbirds committed four errors, but were still able to pull out the win.

Darlington hosts Riverdale today and then hosts Cuba City Thursday, May 9.

Barneveld 19, Pecatonica 4

BARNEVELD - The Pecatonica softball team got a three-run home run and welcomed back one of their pitchers, but the Vikings were undone by Six Rivers East foe Barneveld Monday, May 6.

After going up 1-0 in the first inning, Barneveld padded their lead with eight runs in the third.

Down 9-0, Pecatonica coach Chuck Meyer replaced starting pitcher Cora Demler with Emily Scoville, who had previously been out of action for a whole week due to illness. Meyer was looking to get Scoville back into the swing of things.

Barneveld didn't make it easy on Scoville, hitting her up for 10 runs on six hits and seven walks. Regardless, Meyer was happy to have Scoville back in action.

"Eat some innings ... work on getting better," Meyer said, of his goals for putting Scoville in the game.

On the other side, Barneveld's Kristen Udelhofen gave the Vikings fits for most of the game. It wasn't until the fifth inning that Pecatonica got on the board.

Senior Michelle Francois notched an RBI, and sophomore Brooke Johnson put an exclamation point on the inning with a three-run home run.

"(Johnson) can be a powerful hitter when she gets ahold of the ball," Meyer said. "She's a bat we need in our lineup. Francois ... she hit some of Udelhofen's better pitches."

Udelhofen ultimately threw five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking one.

"Udelhofen did a good job out there," Meyer said. "She's got a good assortment of pitches, and knows when to use them."

Meyer said the fifth inning success against the talented Udelhofen was good to see, not just for Francois and Johnson but for the team as a whole, to help build confidence.

"Any little bit of success is good (for the team)," Meyer said. "We still need to be a little tougher mentally."

Pecatonica (2-11, 2-5) will host a doubleheader against Monticello Tuesday, May 7, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
