DEERFIELD - The Darilngton High School boys basketball team never trailed against Deerfield Saturday night and captured a WIAA Division 4 regional championship with a 64-51 victory.
Juniors Will Schwartz and Ryan Glendenning paced the Redbirds with 15 points each. The Redbirds made seven 3-pointers.
Darlington contained Blake Ehrke, Deerfield's leading scorer. He scored 13 points, hitting just three fields goals and going 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.
The third-seeded Redbirds (19-5) held the second-seeded Demons (21-3) scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. Deerfield tied the game at nine, but Darlington responded with 14 straight points.
Deerfield was within 55-48 with 3 minutes, 30 seconds to play, but Darlington closed the game with a 9-3 run.
Darlington will face Cuba City (17-7) in a sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday at Verona High School. The fourth-seeded Cubans upset top-seeded Iowa-Grant 44-40 Saturday.
