DARLINGTON - The Redbirds found themselves in a huge hole before taking their first at-bat Thursday. The Southwestern Wildcats scored 13 runs in the first inning to roll past the Darlington Redbirds, 15-7 in a SWAL Conference game.
The Redbirds committed three errors, which led to 12 unearned runs. Darlington scored a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings and three runs in the seventh inning, but couldn't overcome the huge first-inning deficit.
Junior Hailey Heins went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and senior Amber Peters went 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs scored to lead the Redbirds.
Darlington (0-8, 0-5 SWAL) will travel to Fennimore Monday.
Juda 8, Argyle 0
ARGYLE - Junior Amber Ramos blanked Argyle on just one hit and went 3 for 4 at the plate with two doubles to lead the Juda Panthers past the Argyle Orioles in a Six Rivers East Conference game.
Ramos fanned nine and walked just one to help the Panthers get their second win in a row. Senior Alycia Grenzow went 2 for 3 with a double as Juda collected eight hits.
Freshman Jessica Treuthardt, who started on the mound for Argyle, struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Juda (5-2, 2-0 Six Rivers East) will participate in the Monroe Invitational Saturday. Argyle (3-2, 1-1) will travel to Black Hawk Tuesday.
Monticello 7, Albany 3
ALBANY - Monticello freshman Claire Geitzel's timing couldn't have been better.
The Comets carried a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning after Albany's Katie Krupke pitched out of two jams in the first and third. Geitzel, who went 3 for 4, hit a two-run inside the park home run in the fifth to give the Ponies a 4-3 lead and they cruised from there.
Monticello junior Desiree Marty was 3 for 4 and had three RBIs. She had a key two-run single in the fourth that put the Ponies on the board. Fellow junior Becky Nelson also was 3 for 4 for the Ponies.
"That was when it started opening up," Albany coach Connie Wunschel said. "We were still ahead, but the next inning really did us in."
Monticello junior Karlie Klossner pitched a complete game and gave up three runs on three hits. She struck out three and walked three.
Albany senior Kaitlin Schulz was 2 for 4 at the plate for the Comets. Krupke pitched a complete game and gave up seven runs on 13 hits. She struck out two and walked three.
