DARLINGTON - This time, all the offensive fireworks belonged to the Fennimore Golden Eagles. One day after winning a 22-18 slugfest over Argyle, the Darlington Redbirds were pounded by Fennimore, 14-4 in the final game of the SWAL conference season Tuesday.
The Redbirds and starting pitcher Brandon Hines were cruising along with a 4-0 lead after four innings, but the Golden Eagles erupted for 10 runs in the fifth inning, followed by three more in the sixth and another run in the seventh.
Senior Joey Meylor went 2 for 2 and senior Colton Hackett added a double as the Redbirds collected seven hits. Fennimore claimed the SWAL Conference title with an 11-3 record (17-4 overall). Darlington closed the regular season 4-7 in the SWAL and 6-11 overall.
The Redbirds will open the WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinals as a No. 5 seed and will travel to fourth-seeded Cuba City Friday.
Parkview 6, Monticello 2
MONTICELLO - Senior Trae Seffrood had an RBI single in the first inning and Josh Kolasch added a run-scoring single in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as the Ponies fell to the Vikings in a non-conference game Tuesday.
Parkview took the lead for good with two runs in the second inning and added another run in the third, plus single tallies in the final three innings.
Corey McGowan went 2 for 4 and Bryce Klitzke hit a double to lead Monticello. Senior pitcher Tyler Ritschard went the distance for the Ponies but took the loss, giving up five earned runs, 10 hits, three strikeouts, and three walks.
Monticello finished the regular season 11-10 overall and 9-6 in the Six Rivers East. They are the No. 1 seed in their regional and will have a first-round bye for Friday's Division 4 regional quarterfinals. They will face the winner of Friday's game between Albany and Faith Christian.
