DARLINGTON - If the season-opening Darlington Invitational is any indication of what the future holds come sectional time, the Redbird boys and girls will both be in contention for a state berth.

The Redbird girls cross country team tied Dodgeville-Mineral Point for the Darlington Invitational title Saturday with 62 points, but the Dodgers were given the championship based on a sixth-runner tiebreaker. Beaver Dam, a Division 1 school, took third (94) and Albany, which took fourth in the Division 3 state meet last year, was fourth (101) out of 13 teams.

"They ran a good race," Darlington coach Arnie Miehe said of the Redbird girls. "I was really pleased with how they ran. Our top four runners were all about 1 minute ahead of where they were last year at this race. It's always nice to win. We learned a lesson that everyone counts and every second matters."

The Dodgeville-Mineral Point boys, a Division 2 school, upended Darlington for the team title 44-56. Albany finished a distant third (115) and Pecatonica-Argyle was 15th (420) out of 16 teams.

"Our guys went out a little too hard," Miehe said of the boys' race. "Dodgeville really had a great race. They (Darlington) have to run a little bit smarter. It's better to learn that lesson now than later in the year. We will see where we go from here."

Belleville senior Noelle Marie won the girls 5,000-meter race with a time of 19 minutes, 29.5 seconds.

Albany senior Ciara Kaderly finished fourth (20:19.5). Darlington junior Reghan Komprood was the top runner for the Redbirds taking seventh (21:09.5).

The Darlington girls had four runners in the top 11 and the Dodgers had all five of their runners in the top 16.

Darlington senior Paige Schilling took ninth (21:20.3) and junior Emma Crist was 10th (21:48.4), followed by sophomore Ilse Mendez who was 11th (21:49.3). Sophomore teammate Kaylee Meyers finished 25th (22:26.3).

Albany junior Emma Guenther ran to an eighth-place finish (21:10.8) and sophomore Megan Anderson was 23rd (22:22.9). Sophomore teammate Kirsten Oliver finished 27th (22:31.6) and freshman Kristen O'Bel took 39th (23:14.5).

Pecatonica-Argyle senior Josie Penniston finished 31st (22:48.8), but the Vikings didn't have enough runners to finish in the team standings.

In the boys' race, Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld senior Lucas Caminiti won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:01.2.

Darlington sophomore Payton Heinberg finished second (17:14.8) and junior teammate Tanner Evenstad was fifth (17:40.5).

Darlington senior Conner Hackett took eighth (17:52.1) and sophomore Tucker Lange took 13th (18:08.7) followed by junior Curtis Blosch who was 28th (19:08.2).

Albany sophomore Josh Dahl finished 12th (18:08.1) and senior Isaac Halverson was 19th (18:43.2). Senior teammate Connor Trow finished 25th (19:02.2) and junior Trevor Mueller was 27th (19:07). Senior Jacob Elmer took 32nd (19:23.9).

Pecatonica-Argyle freshman Troy Nickels took 70th (21:0.7) and freshman teammate Payton Flannery was 73rd (21:30) to lead the Vikings. Senior teammate Caleb Carr placed 84th (23:02.9) and sophomore Cade Bush took 95th (25:25.9). Junior Tyler Wyttenbach finished 98th (28:23.9).
