DARLINGTON - The woes continued for the Redbirds on Friday. Darlington, which had made it to the state championship game in each of the past four seasons, fell to 0-5 on the season after an 18-14 loss to Fennimore (4-1, 2-1 SWAL).
Darlington led 14-12 with 5 minutes, 34 seconds left to play in the first half, but a late Fennimore touchdown with 41 seconds left in the second quarter was the final score of the night.
Kameron Blosch scored on a 1-yard touchdown run at the 10:08 mark in the first quarter to put the Redbirds up early, 7-0. Grady Reilly made it 14-12 with a 3-yard scamper in the second.
Blake Whalen led Darlington with 75 rushing yards on 17 carries, and added another 36 yards passing. As a team, the Redbirds collected just 180 total yards of offense, compared to Fennimore's 305. Each team lost two fumbles, and Darlington's defense intercepted two passes.
The Redbirds, losers of six-straight games, look to right the ship next week on the road at Cambridge.
Black Hawk 60, Belmont 0
BELMONT - The Warriors dominated all three facets of the game in a blowout win over the Braves. Black Hawk gained 373 yards on the ground on just 26 carries (14.3 ypc), while allowing just 49 yards on 35 Belmont carries.
Brody Milz rushed for 147 yards on eight attempts with two scores for Black Hawk. Colby Argall had 118 yards and two scores on 10 carries and Jaylen Rufenacht added 82 yards on just three rushing attempts.
Michael Flanagan finished 3 of 4 passing for 92 yards and two touchdowns, all of which to wideout Jett Rufenacht.
Black Hawk scored three times in the first quarter, first with a 47-yard strike from Flanagan to Jett Rufenacht. The Warriors then got touchdown runs of 49 yards (Milz) and 58 yards (Argall). In the second, Milz and Argall each added their second TDs of the night. Black Hawk also converted on all five two-point conversion attempts in the first half.
Jaylen Rufenacht took the opening kick of the second half 80 yards to pay dirt. Jaylen Rufenacht also scored from 75 yards out on a run in the fourth.
Next week the unblemished Warriors (5-0, 3-0 Six Rivers) travel to Benton-Scales Mound (2-3, 2-2)
Evansville-Albany 38, Edgerton 6
EVANSVILLE - The Blue Devils ran for 299 yards and scored on six of their nine possessions while walloping the Crimson Tide Friday.
Zach Mielke was 6 of 13 passing for 89 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for Evansville-Albany. Tony Paschal had 103 yards rushing and two touchdowns on nine carries, and teammate Logan Katzenmeyer added 94 yards and a score on just five carries for the Blue Devils. Sam Haegele caught three passes for 65 yards and two hit pay dirt twice.
As a team, Evansville-Albany (2-3, 2-3 Rock Valley) outpaced Edgerton (1-4, 1-4) in total yards 379-187. The Blue Devils play at Whitewater (0-5, 0-5) next Friday.
Brodhead-Juda 28, McFarland 27
BRODHEAD - Breken Day had a rushing and receiving touchdown as the Cardinals (1-4, 1-4 Rock Valley picked up their first win of the season.
McFarland (2-3, 2-3) led 14-8 after the first quarter and 27-20 at halftime, but the Brodhead-Juda defense clamped down and pitched a scoreless second half.
Day, who finished with 81 yards rushing on 15 carries and added 42 receiving yards on three catches, scored the game winning touchdown on a 21-yard pass from Parker Johnson with 1:04 left to play in the game.
The end of first half was played out like a rollercoaster. After McFarland took a 21-7 lead in the second quarter with 57 seconds left before halftime, Jeffrey Williams took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to pay dirt. Not to be outdone, McFarland scored with one second left on the clock to close out the first half.
Brodhead finished with 143 rushing yards as a team, but that's only because quarterback Parker Johnson ran backwards for 48 yards on the last play to run out the clock. The Cardinals also forced three turnovers on defense.
Next week the Cardinals travel to Edgerton.
Belleville 21, New Glarus-Monticello 0
NEW GLARUS - Belleville shut out New Glarus-Monticello in the first Capitol South Conference game for both teams Friday.
"We struggled moving the ball offensively," New Glarus-Monticello coach Jeff Eichelkraut said. "They (Belleville) played well. They just made more plays than we did."
The Glarner Knights (2-3, 0-1 Capitol South) travel to Marshall (2-3, 0-0) next week, while Belleville (4-1, 1-0) hosts Waterloo (2-3, 0-1).
