DARLINGTON - Four members of the Darlington-Cuba City girls golf team received academic all-state honors by the Wisconsin Golf Coaches Association.
The academic all-state honorees include seniors Naomi Black, Nikki Zimmerman, Tina Kurschner, along with junior Sami Poss.
Students are nominated by GCAW member coaches if they meet the following criteria: A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25, participation in at least 75 percent of their team's varsity matches, and are at least a sophomore in high school.
Black finished 22nd at the WIAA Division 2 state tournament with a 183 for the two day tournament. It marked Black's second state trip.
The coaches association officials said it's noteworthy that a record 230 female golfers from around the state have been honored this year for maintaining high academic standards in the classroom while competing in varsity golf. The average cumulative GPA of this year's honorees is 3.776. Seventeen of the top 20 finishers in the state tournament in both divisions are academic all-state honorees.
The GCAW was formed by high school golf coaches in 1986 to help develop junior players by promoting golf in schools and communities. Besides honoring both boys and girls who succeed as student athletes, the association also selects an annual all-state team for boys and girls based on their playing ability. On March 1, 2012 a new award honoring the high school team with the highest cumulative GPA was also started.
