SOUTH WAYNE - The Darlington-Black Hawk wrestling team had three champions crowned in the Black Hawk Invitational Saturday, Dec. 7.
Sophomore Caleb Novack (113 pounds), junior Jared Pickett (120) and junior Zach Wolf (heavyweight) each won individual championships. Mount Horeb-Barneveld outdistanced Darlington-Black Hawk 218.5-193 for the team title. It's the first year of the Darlington-Black Hawk wrestling co-op and the team showcased that it can compete with a Division 2 school like the Vikings.
The Warriors were missing three wrestlers including sophomore Joe Quinn (106), junior Colin Novack (126) and junior Stephen Detra (145). Colin Novack, a state qualifier and tournament champion last year, missed the meet because he broke a couple of fingers.
"I think with our full lineup we would have won it," Darlington-Black Hawk co-coach Tom Mathias said. "To have six kids in the finals in a tournament like this really pumps up the kids and the coaches. We feel good about our potential. You always like to win a tournament. We wrestled well considering that we only had 10 wrestlers and Mount Horeb had 14."
Darlington-Black Hawk also had three wrestlers finish in second place, including sophomore Beau Holland (132), senior Dakota Meier (152) and junior Casey Lobdell (160). Sophomore Tyler Komprood (195) took third.
At 113, Caleb Novack defeated Marshall's Lucas Easley 13-3 and defeated Mount Horeb-Barneveld's Tyger Frame 14-0. He pinned Belmont-Platteville's Alexander Sargent in 1 minute, 34 seconds and pinned Dodgeville's Zach Nelson in 4:54. Pickett also finished unbeaten. After two byes, Pickett pinned Mount Horeb-Barneveld's Nate Kruse in 2:36 and pinned River Ridge-Cassville's David Seng in 3:36.
Wolf at heavyweight pinned Waterloo's Dalton Utz in 1:40 and he beat Madison East's Darby Lemkuil 5-0. In the championship, Wolf pulled out a 5-4 win over Columbus' Brenden Lillo.
The three second-place wrestlers each finished 2-1 Saturday. Holland (132) pinned Mineral Point's Tony Rill in 1:38 and pinned Waterloo's Boe Renforth in 3:12. Mount Horeb-Barneveld's Chase Zimpel pinned him in the championship in 3:14.
Meier (152) pinned Mineral Point's Lucas Sanchez in 3:14 and knocked off Waterloo's Evan Meyer 4-0. In the title match, Meier lost to Columbus' Mitchell Hasey 3-1. Lobdell (160) pinned Mineral Point's Alex Liljenberg in 35 seconds. He then pinned Waterloo's Damon Quimby in 1:51 to reach the title match. Parkview's Patrick Engen then beat him 11-3 for the championship.
Mathias said Colin Novack will probably miss about three more weeks with his broken fingers. Darlington-Black hawk will host a dual tournament with several Ridge and Valley teams Saturday, Dec. 14.
"Our ultimate goal is to have everything in place so we can make a run at the end of the year," Mathias said. "Everything we do now is building up to that. We have it on the back of out shirts - 'One team, one mission.'"
