MONROE - Monroe senior volleyball player Abby Jacobson expected better in a rematch against Madison Edgewood.

Edgewood rolled to a three-set sweep of Monroe Thursday 25-12, 25-16, 25-12.

"We had high expectations," Jacobson said. "We just didn't play like ourselves. We were out of our routine because we didn't play Tuesday. There is no excuse."

The Crusaders rolled out to an 8-3 lead in the first game behind two aces from junior Christine Wacek. The Crusaders' powerful hitters continued to dominate at the next in extending the lead to 16-7.

"They are ranked No. 2 in the state for a reason," said Dave Gersbach, Monroe coach.

Edgewood senior outside hitter Paige Kuypers scored four straight service points in the second game to spark the Crusaders to a 12-2 lead. Jacobson came through with a kill for the Cheesemakers (5-10, 1-6 Badger South) to force a sideout. Jacobson had a team-high 12 assists and six digs.

Monroe senior Italian exchange student Sara Donvito scored two service points to cut the Crusaders' lead to 13-7, but that's as close as they would get.

"We were slow," Gersbach said. "We knew where they were going to attack. We just didn't close out and block well. It left way too many holes for the defense to start digging them."

The Cheesemakers jumped out to an early lead in the final set with senior Jaclyn Ditter scoring after tipping a ball at the net to give the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead. Monroe sophomore Becca Armstrong later added an ace to give the Cheesemakers a 3-2 lead. Ditter, who had seven kills, spiked a ball that gave the Cheesemakers a 4-3 lead. However, the Cheesemakers couldn't sustain the momentum. Edgewood got aces from senior Olivia Dittmann and senior Ashley Ring that jump-started a 14-7 lead and the Crusaders never looked back.

"Their serving kept us on our heels," Gersbach said. "We practiced a lot on hitting the deep corners and hitting their vulnerable spots. We didn't execute."

Jacobson said it was frustrating not being able to finish off plays on defense.

"We can usually make those passes," she said. "Something was just a little off. For whatever reason, it just didn't happen tonight. You can only pick up yourself emotionally."
