MADISON - Senior Carter Sawdey's contested layup attempt rolled off the rim at the buzzer and the Monroe High School boys basketball team fell to Madison Edgewood 53-51 Friday.

Monroe senior Alex Tordoff, who scored a game-high 21 points, pushed the ball up the court on the break in the waning seconds, and Monroe coach Brian Bassett called a timeout with 2.3 seconds to go.

"I probably should have let Alex go to the basket and not have called the timeout," Bassett said. "We played a team picked to win the conference at their place down to the end. I'm really encouraged by that. Edgewood has been doing what they have been doing under Coach (Chris) Zwettler for 27 years, and we have been doing what we have been doing for 10 days. Our biggest thing is we have to continue to improve every day."

Tordoff scored on a layup with 37 seconds to go to cut the Crusaders' lead to 52-51.

The Cheesemakers (0-2, 0-1 Badger South) had a critical turnover in the final 30 seconds.

Sawdey added 13 points.

Madison Edgewood senior Alex Arians, a South Dakota State recruit, scored a team-high 19 points.

New Glarus 80, Luther Prep 65

NEW GLARUS - Sophomore guard Zach Feller scored a game-high 27 points and drilled four 3-pointers to lead New Glarus over Watertown Luther Prep.

It was the first time New Glarus defeated Luther Prep since joining the Capitol Conference in 2006-07.

Sophomore point guard Jaden Kreklow added 18 points and junior Cullen Brooks had 17 points for New Glarus (2-0). The Glarner Knights hit seven 3-pointers and shot 13 of 21 from the free-throw line.

"I was pretty happy with three guys in double figures," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "I was really pleased with our defensive effort tonight."
