Comets do more with less in first league win

ALBANY - Sometimes, less is more.

Albany coach Derik Doescher dressed just seven ballplayers for Saturday night's Six Rivers East matchup with Juda and his scant roster delivered the squad's first league victory, 57-53.

With starting center Tyler Bauman still out of the lineup, the Comets turned to Mike Elmer to hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to force overtime.

With Lance and Bryce Hulbert both fouled out of the game in regulation, the remaining five Comets outscored the Panthers, 11-7, in the extra session as T.J. Zweifel hit the game-icing free throws with 7.5 ticks left.

"If he hits one of two, it's awfully scary with the ball in Kurtis Mansfield's hands," Doescher said.

Mansfield led Juda with 15 points. Zweifel led the Comets' attack with 12 points, as six of the seven players scored seven or more points.

"Guys are starting to make some big plays in crucial situations and that's something we haven't had this season up until the last two games," Doescher said. "We're coming alive at the right time."
