ARGYLE - Albany girls basketball coach Mike Brunhoefer says that his team doesn't have an ideal post player.
Argyle girls basketball coach Johnny Hinojosa may beg to differ after Albany junior Sydney Bump scored a game-high 18 points to propel the Comets to a 49-22 win over the Orioles Friday night.
"I would compare her to a Kimee Chandler," Hinojosa said of Pecatonica's UW-Milwaukee recruit.
Brunhoefer understands one of the Comets' best attributes is their quickness.
"We don't have a 6-foot go-to post player," Brunhoefer said. "Sydney does good for her size. We know the only way we will beat teams is with our press."
Argyle trailed 8-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Comets used a 13-1 second quarter run to break the game open. Bump ignited the spurt scoring down low and scoring on a layup on the break off a pinpoint pass from junior Hayli Peach, who scored 11 points.
Bump scored eight of her 18 points in the second quarter as the Comets went to a press and forced some costly turnovers for the Orioles. Peach drilled two 3-pointers and the Comets led 21-5 with 4 minutes, 41 seconds to go in the second quarter.
"Coming into the second quarter, we started to play speed ball and they beat us," Hinojosa said. "We can't run with a team like that."
Bump knows the importance of fine-tuning the press.
"We were working really hard on our press and tried to push them more," she said. "We tried to work on our presses. We need to get better so when we play Black Hawk, we can try to put pressure on them."
The Comets started the third quarter in a flurry with an 11-2 run. Peach nailed a 3-pointer to give the Comets a 26-7 lead and Bump scored down low. Albany freshman Kirstie Kauk scored on a drive to give the Comets a 34-9 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter.
"If Hayli hits her first couple shots, we normally roll," Brunhoefer said. "If she misses a couple shots, she gets down on herself."
Albany (7-4, 2-1 Six Rivers East) was playing its first game in 11 days. The Comets also received a big boost as junior Kaitlyn Schulz was cleared to play after recovering from an injury. She's starting to work her way back.
"We needed to play," Brunhoefer said. "I knew we would be rusty."
The Comets used a 2-3 zone at times and the Orioles struggled shooting from the outside.
"We were cold," Hinojosa said. "We couldn't hit the side of a barn."
Hinojosa is well aware that the Comets press and defensive pressure can be deceiving since the Comets don't have a lot of size.
"They kind of give you that mystic look and they are quick," he said. "The turnovers killed us. We can break any press. The key is what we do after that."
Albany junior Courtney Pfeuti scored eight points. Albany freshman Carlie Peters scored six fourth quarter points off the bench to give the Comets a spark.
"She took advantage of her opportunity," Brunhoefer said. "They let her go to the board and she went."
Argyle junior Kelsey Bartels led the Orioles with six points and sophomores Danielle Treuthardt and Cortney Gilbertson each scored four points.
