ALBANY - Junior point guard Tyler Dahl scored a career-high 38 points to propel Albany to a 74-71 overtime win over Argyle Friday.
Dahl scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to help the Comets erase a nine-point deficit to force overtime. Dahl made 9 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter.
"It was a lot of heart by Tyler Dahl in the fourth quarter," Albany coach Derik Doescher said.
Albany (3-8, 2-2 Six Rivers East) used a 2-3 and 1-2-2 zone for three quarters. Doescher switched to a man-to-man defense in the fourth quarter.
"It forced a few things and we got some tempo," Doescher said.
However, with Dahl, junior Jontae Pegeese and junior Cole Trapp all fouled out, the Comets trailed and needed someone to make a play. Albany senior Mitchell Trow drilled a 3-pointer with about 20 seconds to go in the overtime to give the Comets a 72-71 lead.
Trow scored 15 points and hit three 3-pointers.
"We found a way to win," Doescher said.
Argyle junior Riley Ostby scored a team-high 28 points. Both Argyle's Kyle Emberson and Kyle Olson each added nine points.
Argyle made 23 of 31 free throws compared to Albany hitting 18 of 26.
Black Hawk 60, Barneveld 42
SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk senior Heath Butler scored a game-high 35 points and had 15 rebounds to power the Warriors to a 60-42 win over Barneveld.
"I think the most impressive play I saw him (Butler) make is he took a charge," Black Hawk coach Charlie Anderson said. "When one of our best players takes a charge that fires us up."
Black Hawk (5-4, 4-0 Six Rivers East) opened the game with a 19-7 run in the first quarter. The Warriors built a 16-point lead by the half.
Black Hawk senior Taylor Rupnow added 13 points. Butler scored 11 points in the first quarter to spark the Warriors.
"We looked for him (Butler) early," Anderson said. "If we can get some layups early and see the ball go through the basket that usually helps."
Barneveld was led by Matthew Myers and Brycen Sorensen who each had 11 points.
Darlington 65, Southwestern 38
DARLINGTON - The Darlington boys basketball team remained unbeaten rolling to a 65-38 win over Southwestern.
Darlington (10-0, 4-0 SWAL) jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter and the lead grew to 19 points by halftime. Darlington senior Ben Muhlstein scored a team-high 14 points. Senior Cole McDonald and sophomore Hunter Johnson each added 10 points for the Redbirds.
"Regardless of the score, it was a sloppily played game by both teams," Darlington coach Mike Hopkins said. "Our execution was not where we want it to be. We're almost at the midway point of the season and we're still inconsistent.
"We came out and basically played even in the third quarter; intensity-wise we got outplayed. That's something that can't happen as we're ready to head to our next game at Platteville (Monday)."
Darlington will play Mineral Point in an unbeaten showdown Thursday.
"Those games will be good measuring stick to see how good we are. We're undefeated, but we've been inconsistent. This isn't just something that happened tonight. We came out in the second half and didn't play with the same intensity. We can't expect to play two and a half quarters of solid basketball against teams that are better competition. ... We've been a little up and down in terms of our execution and offense, and that does concern me."
