Cold and wet, Cheese fall to Oregon

MONROE - For the most part, the Cheesemakers golf team shot about what is expected of them. For a couple of holes, however, each of Monroe's players struggled.

"That was about their par for the course. They played about the same as they have been," Monroe head coach Brian Jensen said after the Cheesemakers' 170-188 loss to Oregon Friday.

Kyle Bruce again recorded Monroe's best score, shooting an 8-over-par 42 on the front nine at Monroe Country Club in wet and cold conditions.

"Kyle's score was probably a little bit higher than what he would have hoped," Jensen said of his top golfer, who recorded only two pars. "Lucas Jordan was right around what he's been shooting all year and the same with Jessy (Stagliano), even though they had a couple high scores."

Jordan finished second on the team with a 46 and Stagliano had a 47. Stagliano birdied the par-3 second hole, but a quintuple-bogey on the long par-4 fourth hole knocked him off his pace. On the seventh hole, Stagliano's drive trickled off the front end of the tee box and it took him a few shots from the deep rough to find the fairway.

"After I got out, I hit a pretty good shot and was able to get up and down in eight (strokes). I was looking forward to getting to No. 8, but then I put it in the water," said Stagliano, who carded a triple-bogey on the par-3 eighth.

Caleb Pagel carded Monroe's fourth varsity score, netting a 53. Dylon Wilde, who shot the team's second-best mark the day before in Fort Atkinson, carded a 56. Wilde opened the day with a 7-over on the par-3 second hole.

"It was a little cold and wet and I couldn't hit a shot in the beginning," Wilde said. "I got a little better in the end."

Oregon's Brady Johnson set the pace with a 40.

"(On) our nine hole events, we've been eliminating some of the bad holes and the guys are starting to see that it helps the team and not just themselves individually," Jensen said. "The team scores have gone down, which is nice to see because we do have some kids returning next year."

Thursday, the Cheesemakers lost to Fort Atkinson, 172-182. Bruce shot a 40, Wilde 45, Jordan 47, and Stagliano chipped in a 50.

Monroe hosts its annual Best Ball Tournament today. Friday's meet concluded the conference season for the Cheesemakers.

Monroe, along with eight other teams, tee off at the crack of dawn and will play through lunch.

"I don't think waking up that early in the morning on a Saturday will be easy for them. But it's a Best Ball event. It's not a big deal," Jensen said. "They'll come out (and) have some fun. They don't have to play every hole if they are having a bad hole. It's more to just see some of the other kids and to see more of the fun side of golf. It's a different event, a different style."
