Co-op gets green light

MONROE - With the Monroe cooperative boys hockey team set to hit the ice in two weeks for practice, there was still one major hurdle to clear.

The Monroe School Board on Monday approved an intergovernmental agreement that lays the foundation for the hockey co-op with the Albany, Beloit Turner, Darlington, Freeport, Lena-Winslow, Parkview and Pecatonica School districts. Each school board also will have to sign the agreement.

"It's just a formality," Monroe School District Superintendent Cory Hirsbrunner said.

The intergovernmental agreement includes the responsibilities of the Monroe School District, each partnering school and the Forum Monroe Youth Hockey Association. The co-op, which is expected to be fully funded by Forum MYHA, is for two years.

Monroe Business Manager Ron Olson said MYHA will pay 50 percent of the estimated cost of the program prior to the season. The first hockey practice is set for Nov. 5.

Last November, the hockey association pledged to raise $10,000 the first year of the program and projected $35,848 in expenses and $19,846 in income. Last year, hockey leaders said they would charge a $992 player fee and keep the program ongoing through fundraising if needed.

The district is serving as the fiscal agent of the co-op. Monroe Athletic Director Dave Hirsbrunner set the schedule, hired a coach and Monroe Principal Rick Waski along with Hirsbrunner worked with hockey leaders on the intergovernmental agreement and responsibilities.

Olson said after the season, once the expenditures and gate repeats are determined, MYHA will pay the rest of the cost of the program.

"It's the same mode of operation we have with the soccer program," Olson said.

Board member Dan Bartholf questioned what would happen if MYHA can't pay the rest of the cost.

"If they can't pay the cost of the program and default the board won't have the program next year," Olson said.

Each school that is part of the co-op will be responsible for getting players transported to Monroe for practices and games at SLICE. The MYHA will provide workers for games.

Monroe will play a 12 game season and be a part of the Badger Conference.
