COTTAGE GROVE - The Cheesemakers picked up its biggest win of the season Thursday night on the road at Monona Grove, 12-10.
Austin Burandt clutched up in the top of the seventh, driving a 2-out, bases clearing double to put the Cheesemakers ahead for good. The two teams were tied at 8 when the hit took place.
"We kept telling the kids that the hitting will come, and tonight we had a lot of big hits," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "We had a nice approach at the plate. We had guys on base all night and we were stinging the ball hard."
Burandt finished 2 for 5 with 3 runs and 4 RBIs for the Cheesemakers, who's entire lineup made something happen at the plate. Kramer Henning as 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Kevin Klopfenstein (3 for 5, 3 RBIs), Mitch Marty (2 for 3, 2 runs), Michael Turek (2 for 4, run), Dylan Schwitz (1 for 4, 3 runs), Mitch Riese (1 for 3, 2 runs), Drew Nafzger (1 for 5, RBI, run) and Logan Wells (1 for 4) all produced well.
Monona Grove took a 3-0 lead after two innings, but a 2-run third and 5-run fourth brought Monroe back into the game.
Wells started on the hill for the Cheesemakers and allowed 8 runs (6 earned) on 10 hits and four walks in six innings. He also struck out four.
"Logan didn't have his best stuff, but he battled and kept us in the game," Huffman said.
Marty closed out the game in the seventh, allowing two unearned runs.
"It's nice to be able to have Marty close the door," Huffman said.
Monroe (3-3, 2-1 Badger South) hosts Orangeville, Ill., in a non-conference game today. League play picks up again Tuesday at home against perennial conference contender Oregon.
