MONROE - The pole vault remains a signature event for Monroe senior Tre Voegeli and the Cheesemakers.
Voegeli teamed with freshmen Josie Eberle and Lizzy Brennan to win the pole vault at the 48th annual Simpson Relays with a combined height of 17 feet on Friday. Voegeli cleared a Simpson Relay best 10 feet.
"It's a good feeling and a big boost," Voegeli said. "We needed it at this point in the season. It was fun working with the other vaulters on the team because the vault is usually an individual thing."
Voegeli, a state qualifier in the pole vault last year, missed at 10-6, but she remains upbeat that she is getting back into form.
"There were some good attempts," she said. "I just need to work on being more consistent with my vaulting. There is definitely room for improvement."
Stoughton won the Simpson Relays and snapped Sun Prairie's five-year championship streak. Monroe finished fifth out of eight teams.
"I was really pleased top to bottom," Monroe girls track coach Doug Miller said. "There was some really good competition and we were a little short-handed without two of our high jumpers. Stoughton is very deep."
The Cheesemakers took third place in the high jump with a team of freshman Jordan Hirsbrunner, sophomore Abby Oudinot and Eberle. Hirsbrunner cleared 5 feet and was the top jumper for the Cheesemakers.
"I wanted to make it even higher," said Hirsbrunner, who jumped at the Kansas Relays last week. "I was OK with 5-0. Third place out of eight teams is pretty good. Josie and Abby really haven't even high jumped much."
The Cheesemakers also got a third-place finish in the shot put from seniors Angie Beaver, Whitney Disch and freshman Mia Wahl (90-2 1/2), and third place from Beaver, Disch and sophomore Brooke Rowe in the discus (243-10).
"It really was a pleasant surprise," Miller said of the shot put and discus. "They probably all had a PR."
Beaver threw a lifetime best 33-11 in the shot put and Disch eclipsed 30 feet. The Darlington girls track team posted four fourth- place finishes. The Redbirds took fourth in the 800 medley relay (2:01.9) and fourth in the 1,600 relay (4:20.43). The Redbirds added fourth-place finishes in the pole vault (14-0) and discus (240-0).
The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team took fourth (55.21) and fourth in the long jump (45-5 1/4). The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay took fifth (4:22.31).
"I think we performed really well," Miller said. "The 1,600 relay ran well."
