MONROE - Sophomore Nick Schumacher scored four goals to power the Monroe boys soccer team to a 6-2 win over Jefferson in the championship of the Monroe tournament Saturday at Honey Creek Park.
Jefferson scored two goals in the first 16 minutes, 46 seconds. Monroe (2-2), which defeated Richland Center 4-0 to get in the title game, scored six unanswered goals to win the title.
"We were really getting on Nick about being more aggressive," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "He was in the forward spot playing like a midfielder trying to set everyone else up. We told Nick it's OK to keep the ball and finish sometimes. It really sunk in. He realized with his skills he can beat some of those guys."
Schumacher scored his first goal on a penalty kick at 22:19. Schumacher scored his second goal on a penalty kick after he was knocked down.
"Right away, I realized a couple of our older guys were taking them lightly because we have beaten Jefferson the last couple of years in our tournament," Vasquez said. "We were telling our forwards to be aggressive. We could tell they might be a little quicker. We thought we could use our speed to our advantage and when they (Jefferson) got beat, they had to grab and pull guys down to prevent a one-on-one with the goalie."
Schumacher scored a third goal for the hat trick on an assist from freshman Aaron Ziolkowski at 46:58 to give the Cheesemakers a 3-2 lead. Less than 2 minutes later, Schumacher scored his fourth goal on a pass from senior Nick Borowitz.
Monroe freshman Alex Barradas scored a goal on an assist from Ziolkowski at 50:08 and senior Silas Setterstrom capped the scoring with an unassisted goal at 56:03.
After the game when the Cheesemakers were taking a victory lap over near the home fans, Barradas helped up a Jefferson defender and assisted him in walking to join his team after an injury.
"Alex helped the kid up who was bigger than him after he had pounded on Alex the whole game," Vasquez said. "I thought it was one of those moments you enjoy as a coach. He's (Barradas) is a quiet kid. I thought it was kind of special to see as a coach."
