MONONA - The Monroe boys track team swept a triple dual Tuesday and has the inside track for a third straight Badger South Conference championship.
The Monroe boys defeated Madison Edgewood 116-25, Milton 96-50 and knocked off Monona Grove 82-64. The Cheesemakers and Silver Eagles were Badger South co-champions last year. The Monroe girls also earned a sweep. The Cheesemakers beat Madison Edgewood 89-57, Milton 113-33 and rolled to a 121-23 win over Monona Grove. The Monroe girls track team is also in the driver's seat for a third straight conference title.
"This was a huge meet," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "Monona Grove is a very good track team."
The Cheesemakers got off to an ominous start when in the 3,200-meter relay, the Silver Eagles edged them on a lean at the finish to win the race.
"We didn't get off to a great start," Miller said. "We had that as a race we had to have. We had a group of seniors step up big and get us back into it."
Monroe senior Michael Barrett won the high jump with a career best (6 feet, 6 inches) and freshman Jake Hirsbrunner took second (6-4). Senior Cameron Wahl won the poll vault (12-0).
"Those two high jumpers came up big," Miller said.
Monroe's Skyler Stingley won the 400 (:53.32) and freshman Ethan Moehn finished first in the 800 (2:03.79). The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team including Alex Barenklau, Stingley, Hirsbrunner and Dylan Starck finished first with a time of 3 minutes, 37.28 seconds.
Starck finished second in the 800 (2:04.71), and second in the 1,600 (4:44.37). He may have sacrificed a chance to win an event, but he had to run smart so he still had something left for the 1,600 relay.
"Dylan had a great meet and ran smart," Miller said. "He had a team perspective of winning a conference championship in mind."
Senior Caleb Arenas took second in the 110 hurdles (:15.75) and Stingley was second in the 200 (:23.30). Senior Nick Walker took second in the shot put (49-10) and discus (128-11 3/4). The Cheesemakers caught a break when the Silver Eagles' top discus thrower, who has thrown 170-0, scratched on all of his throws.
Barrett added a second place in the long jump (20-7) and senior Evan Brady took second in the pole vault (10-6). The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Jon Becker, Ethan Schuttler, Barrett and Jeffrey Hill finished second with a time of 45.79 seconds.
The Monroe girls dominated the triple dual winning nine events. Monroe senior Jaclyn Ditter won four individual events including the 100 hurdles (:15.89), the 300 hurdles (:49.51), the 200 (:27.15) and the long jump (15-9).
"She has worked hard," Miller said of Ditter. "For her to go out and win four events is a great day for her. So far she has produced."
Fellow senior Jess Leu won the shot put (34-0) and discus (99-7 3/4).
The Cheesemakers won three of the four relays. Monroe's 3,200 relay team of Alexa Yurs, Abby Rogerson, Therese Hughes and Molly Hlubek finished first with a time of 10:48.65.
The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Jessica Jackson, Brenna Bazley, Maria Eberle and Lauren Werth took first, with a time of 53.16 seconds. Bazley and Eberle teamed with Cheyenne Foster and Hlubek to win the 800 relay with a time of 1:55.19.
Monroe is at the Wisconsin Heights Invitational Friday. The next conference dual meet is Tuesday, May 3 at Oregon.
