EVANSVILLE - Last year, Monroe's Dempzy Foley was kicking field goals for the Monroe football team. Now, he's scoring goals in the postseason for the soccer team.

Foley scored two goals to help the Cheesemakers upset Evansville 2-1 in overtime in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal Thursday night. Foley chose to play soccer this year so he could play on the same team as his older brother, senior McKenzy Foley.

"It was nice to see someone else step up and score," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "Dempzy wanted to make sure his brother got another game. Both he and his brother are fighters. They are not going to quit."

Monroe (8-10-1) advances to play in the regional championship game where the Cheesemakers will play top-seeded Sugar River in Belleville on Saturday.

Sugar River (16-3) defeated Cambridge-Deerfield 3-0 Thursday in Belleville.

After a scoreless first half, the Blue Devils struck first with a goal at 63 minutes, 1 second. Foley scored the game-tying goal at 80:15.

By rule, since the game was tied after regulation time, the teams had to play two 10-minutes overtimes.

Foley scored his second goal in the first overtime at 96:51 to give Monroe a 2-1 lead and the Cheesemakers held on through the second overtime despite several players playing more than 100 minutes of soccer.

"The guys were pretty confident going in," Vasquez said.

"They had to fight for every inch tonight. Evansville may have more depth, but a lot of our young guys didn't get a break and played 110 minutes, and they fought it out. They always play hard and I wanted them to get rewarded. This is the first time in years they got rewarded."
