STOUGHTON - According to Cheesemakers head coach Dale Buvid, Monroe just barely squeaked by the Vikings Tuesday, winning 4-3.
"We just hung on. Stoughton is a much improved program," he said.
Monroe scored two runs in the first inning off of an RBI triple by senior Maggie Schuttler, who finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs. The Cheesemakers added two more runs in the second, before being shut down for good.
"(Stoughton's) pitcher just took control of the game," Buvid said. "We got just two hits over the last five innings."
Meghan Roberts held her own on the mound for Monroe. The senior hurler recorded five strikeouts and two walks, and allowed two earned runs on nine hits.
"Megan did enough on the mound. She kept the ball down well. Stoughton only had about three hard hits, the rest of the hits weren't hit very hard," Buvid said.
Stoughton scored two runs in the fourth and threatened again in the seventh. After scoring already in the final inning, the tying run was left stranded on second base.
Monroe (9-6, 5-0 Badger South) has a tough schedule on the way. In the next two weeks, the Cheesemakers play Stoughton again, as well as two conference games.
"I think this whole conference season will be figured out in about two weeks," Buvid said.
