FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe High School girls soccer team was less than 2 minutes away from its first Badger South Conference win of the season Thursday when Fort Atkinson's Auhea Simmons scored the game-tying goal.
The Cheesemakers and the Blackhawks finished in a 1-1 tie. Even though it's a conference game, varsity soccer teams no longer play overtime since they now play two 45-minutes halves.
Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill was pleased with the Cheesemakers' effort.
"It's nice to get a winner of a game," O'Neill said. "I think it (injuries) affected the outcome of the game. It's a huge disappointment because we dominated the game even though the score was tied."
Monroe sophomore Olivia Werth didn't play due to a concussion.
Monroe junior Payton Noble scored a goal on an assist from freshman Emily Benzschawel at 64 minutes, 46 seconds to give the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead.
It was a tough loss to stomach because Monroe (6-1-1, 0-1-1 Badger South) was so close to getting the win.
"I think it (Simmons' game-tying goal) was just a momentary lack of focus for the team," O'Neill said. "They played extremely tough and hard. It's the best match they have played. Every time they are out there they get stronger and better."
With soccer games being 90 minutes long now, O'Neill will not push to add overtime.
"With us being a small school it's very hard because we have smaller numbers," she said. "With 90 minutes we couldn't play overtime."
