MONROE - On senior night, Monroe's seniors swam some of the best races of their careers.
"But the bright spots didn't stop with our seniors," Cheesemaker head coach Linda Moser said. "Many of the other girls swam personal bests tonight too."
Though Edgewood won the meet 103-67, Moser sent a sharp reminder that in swimming, it's not all about the win-loss column.
"If you look at the win-loss columns, we would look very dreary. But tonight, like many other nights, in the pool we proved that we are far from a dreary team," Moser said. "We keep improving and moving forward, even when face with fighting the flu bug and injuries."
Monroe's top 200 relay team of Randi Robertson, Leanna Schwartzlow, Kendell Niffenegger and Veronica Andraski won the first event of the night in 2:15.49, three seconds better than their previous best on the year. Jolene Denure, Paige Hoesly, Kylee Ritschard and Britney Johnson finished third in 2:27.11.
Monroe got two other first-place finishes; Niffenegger won the 100 butterfly in 1:17.24 and Robertson won the 100 backstroke in 1:14.21 over teammate Sarah Heitkamp. Heitkamp, Robertson and Niffenegger teamed to take third in the 400 relay (4:39.63) with Schwartzlow.
Heitkamp finished second in the 200 freestyle relay (2:05.36) with Andraski, Johnson and Ritschard. Andraski also finished second in the 200 individual medley in 2:49.14, breaking her personal best by two seconds, and Ritschard took the silver in the 100 breaststroke (1:31.09).
According to Moser, Elizabeth Eiseman (1:12.91, 100 free), Abby Hlubek (1:38.55, 100 breast), Cassie Coffey (100 backstroke), Hoesly (33.59, 50 free), Johnson (31.95, 50 free), Denure (100 backstroke, 100 butterfly) and Niffenegger (100 butterfly) all dropped times with personal best races.
Monroe has one more home meet (McFarland on Oct. 21) and four total before the conference meet on Halloween at Monona Grove.
In junior varsity action, Monroe fell to Edgewood 102-57.
