MONROE - The Monroe softball team will take a nine-game winning streak and the confidence that comes with it into Division 2 regional play this week.
The Cheesemakers dominated a solid Richland Center team in a doubleheader Saturday, winning 10-0 in five innings and 7-2 to close the regular season with a 16-7 mark.
Monroe coach Dale Buvid pointed out the Hornets were without one of their top players, but said it was still good to thump a team that enters Division 2 regional play as a No. 1 seed.
"That's a No. 1 seed seed in our sectional and we 10-runned them," said Buvid, whose No. 2-seeded Monroe squad will host No. 7 Clinton in a regional opener on Thursday.
"Things are coming together decently for us. We feel good about the way we're playing right now. We certainly have a chance."
Junior Becca Armstrong was dominant in the circle, pitching the first four innings of both games without allowing a run. She had 12 strikeouts and one walk combined over the eight innings.
Junior Corey Wells relieved Armstrong in both affairs and allowed two unearned runs over four innings.
Monroe's batters were ready from the get-go, as the first five reached in the opener and all five scored. Sophomore Kayla Updike and seniors Kasey Gutzmer, Alyssa Montgomery and Sarah Alexander had RBIs in the inning.
Sophomore Taylor O'Leksy went 3-for-3 to lead Monroe's eight-hit attack and Gutzmer scored three runs.
In the nightcap, sophomore Ellie Grossen went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple. Freshman Kari Jordan had a two-run double and Montgomery added a two-run single.
