MONROE - The Cheesemakers wrestling team got the win it needed - a solid 41-30 showing over Fort Atkinson on parents night Thursday.

"Everyone wrestled well tonight - especially some of the younger guys," Monroe head coach Jeriamy Jackson said.

Lucas Leu opened the night with a pin of Marcus Crandall in the heavyweight division in 1 minute, 48 seconds.

"Lucas Leu continued to wrestle well and came up big for the team when they needed him," Jackson said.

Monroe forfeited at 103, but came back with Gavin Wels' major decision win over Sean Staude in the 112 class.

Cody Stamm lost a hotly contested matchup at 119 to Cory Schuerman, 4-2, before Monroe gave up another weight class (125) to forfeit.

In a pre-match move, Jackson plugged in freshman Justin Helton at 130. Though Helton was pinned in 5:11, he showed some promise.

"Justin filled in and fought very hard. He is really working hard and getting better," Jackson said.

Monroe got wins from Dylan Schwitz (135), Jack Deem (140), Steven Steiner (152) and Cory Kundert (215).

"Jack Deem looked very good tonight. He was starting to put some moves together and kept himself out of trouble," Jackson said. "And Steven Steiner wrestled well and came away with a big pin in a big spot. That really put us in a position to win the match."

Dillon Weckerly (171) and Michael Ingold (189) received forfeit wins.

"Hopefully this will motivate us a little going into this weekend's dual meet tournament at Verona," Jackson said.

The action starts at 9:15 a.m. Saturday.
