MONONA - The Monroe softball team unleashed several weeks of offensive frustration on Monona Grove in a 12-0, five-inning victory in Badger South Conference play Friday.
Kayla Updike and Heather Barta had two hits apiece to lead an 11-hit attack for the Cheesemakers (9-7, 6-4 Badger South). Corey Wells and Kari Jordan each had two RBIs.
Coach Dale Buvid said it was only the second time in seven games that Monroe reached the five-run mark.
"I think it's a step in the right direction," Buvid said. "We stole seven bases, drew five walks and kept the pressure on them by being aggressive on the bases.
"We've been pretty stale for a pretty long stretch. It's nice to get off the schneid and get it cranked up as we get closer to the postseason."
Becca Armstrong started in the circle and scattered three hits over four innings while striking out eight without issuing a walk. Wells pitched the fifth, allowing only one walk.
Monroe lost catcher Chandra McGuire when she was hit in the elbow by a pitch and suffered significant swelling, Buvid said.
"She might be lost for a while," he said.
