NEW GLARUS - Monroe seniors Sam Kind and Dempzy Foley captured individual titles while the Cheesemaker wrestling team finished second at the Raider Scramble in New Glarus Saturday.
Evansville-Albany edged the Cheesemakers for the team title 210-192.5. Brodhead-Juda took fourth (122.5), and Sugar River was sixth (86.5) at the nine-team invitational. The Cheesemakers had six wrestlers reach championship matches. Evansville-Albany had seven champions, including Jared Miller at 113 pounds, Evan Senter (120), Austin Schfield (126), Adam Staver (132), Ben Barmore (138), Nolan Kicmol (145) and Branden Lange (heavyweight).
"When you do that, that is how you win championships," Monroe coach Tom Witt said of Evansville-Albany having seven individual champions. "They had a full lineup and we didn't. Max Patterson had a concussion in his first match. Our goal wasn't to win it. We wanted to wrestle well and do the best we can, and for the most part, we did. If we would have been full strength, it would have been close."
Kind (10-1) at 170 went 4-0 after a first-round bye. He pinned Corey Leman of Durand-Pecatonica, Illinois, in 2 minutes, 41 seconds. Kind then defeated Tanner Bell 7-2 and knocked off Evansville-Albany's Tyler Assen 7-2 in a semifinal match. In the title match, Kind defeated Dodgeville's Joey Recob 9-2.
