ALBANY - In a tune-up before the Southern Badger Conference meet, the Monroe girls cross country team looks to build off a fifth-place finish at the Baertschi Invitational on Saturday.

"I think the girls found out about themselves today," Monroe coach Brian Jefferson said. "I think it proved as a good mental test."

In the large-school division race, Monroe junior Tess Seichter finished fifth with a time of 16 minutes, 24.32 seconds.

Seichter said she wasn't excited about running up the hills on the course.

"Everyone has to run the same course, so I can't complain," Seichter said. "It's not my favorite, but it's more memorable because of the hills, heat and mud. The hamster shavings - that is hard to run in."

Monroe sophomore Rachel Rogerson took 23rd (17:43) and junior Tessa Frutiger finished 30th (18:13).

After missing most of the season with a knee injury, Monroe junior Stephanie Wyss gave the Cheesemakers a boost, taking 34th with a time of 18:21. Sophomore Abbey Schneider rounded out the top five for the Cheesemakers, finishing 37th (18:33).

Jefferson knew personal-best times would be hard to come by. Before the race, Jefferson's message was clear.

"I told them times will not be an indicator of success," he said. "It will be how you compete."

The Cheesemakers ran without Molly Hlubek and Sommer Bertalot, who were given the meet off to rest before conference.

Pecatonica senior Elise Sigg, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit, won the small school division race, but finished second overall to Brookfield Central's Hannah Trasser. Sigg ran the course in 15:19, about five seconds behind Trasser.

Sigg said at the end of the race, she thought she could catch Trasser.

"She (Trasser) was kicking it in, too," Sigg said. "It was good to have some competition."

New Glarus-Monticello's Kelsey Bernet took third in the small school division race with a time of 15:56. New Glarus-Monticello finished third overall, placing four runners in the top 19, including Rachel Miller, 10th (17:41); Elizabeth Brunner, 11th (17:44) and Lou Judd, 19th (18:23).

"She (Bernet) is a smart and instinctive runner," New Glarus-Monticello coach Steve Wehrley said.

Albany had three runners in the top 18, paced by Jessica Mauerman, who finished sixth with a time of 16:57. Nicolette Blumer (18:08) and Ingrid Kallgren (18:21) finished 15th and 18th, respectively.
