WATERTOWN - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team dominated to win 116-54 in a dual meet over Watertown Tuesday.

Monroe-New Glarus won 10 of the 11 events. The Cheesemakers improve to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in Badger South in dual meets. Monroe-NG also won the Lodi Invitational this season.

"We had solid swims tonight," coach Linda Moser said. "There weren't as many PRs as usual, but we are coming to the tough part of the season both physically and mentally."

Monroe-New Glarus senior Maddie Hammer won the 100-yard freestyle (56.26 seconds) and finished first in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 20.16 seconds). Junior Nina Schiro took first in the 100 backstroke (1:08.24) and 500 freestyle (5:52.08).

Mekenzie Hammer won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.98) and freshman Francesca Schiro finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:08.94). Monroe senior Grace Keith won the 50 freestyle.

Monroe-New Glarus swept the top three spots in the 200 IM and 200 freestyle. Freshman Anna Newcomer took second in the 200 IM (2:38.60) and Ganshert was third (2:42.52). Benzschawel added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:12.23) and Francesca Schiro placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.63).

The Hammer sisters teamed with Keith and junior Cammi Ganshert to win the 200 medley relay (2:00.82). The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Mekenzie Hammer, freshman Megan Benzschawel, Ganshert and Francesca Schiro won the race with a time of 1:51.29.

Monroe-New Glarus has two more dual meets and two invitational meets left in the regular season. The Cheesemakers will host McFarland Oct. 10 at the Green County Family YMCA. McFarland is ranked No. 7 in Division 2, according to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association State Poll.

"Then we hit the big conference meet," Moser said.

Madison Edgewood remains No. 1 in the rankings, while Badger South teams Monona Grove (9) and Fort Atkinson (10) are also ranked.

Monroe-New Glarus beat Monona Grove and Fort Atkinson head-to-head already this year.
