LODI - In a hard-fought battle between two competitive teams, the Monroe soccer team found themselves fall just short in a 2-1 double overtime loss to Lodi.

After the host Blue Devils scored in the first half, Monroe sophomore Maddie Kallgren tied things up with a goal in the 51st minute. With the scored tied, both teams tightend up in an all-out defensive battle.

"Very exciting," Cheesemakers coach Miriam O'Neill said. "It was intense from the get-go. Lodi is a very strong and competitive team. We did an amazing job in playing a full game in addition to two additional overtimes."

The Cheesemakers defense and goalie Gwen Ambrose held the state's top scorer in Chyann Schmidt in check throughout much of the game, but despite their best efforts, the Blue Devils got past with just enough to win the game.

While her team may not have gotten the result that they had hoped for, O'Neill remains proud of the way the Cheesemakers played.

"This game was a great achievement," she said. "As the game went on, we picked up the intensity and played very hard. All season long we've been fighting little injuries and battling through tough games, which is a credit to these players."

Sugar River 2,

Lakeside Lutheran 1

LAKE MILLS - Two days removed from ending Lodi's 27 conference-game winning streak, the Sugar River soccer team extended what has been an impressive run of their own. With their 2-1 overtime win over Lakeside Lutheran on Thursday, the Raiders remain atop the Capitol conference standings.

Things seemed a bit scary at first for the Raiders. After the Warriors scored within the opening 10 minutes, Sugar River was held scoreless and headed into the half trailing 1-0. After a long wait, the Raiders finally got on the board thanks to a goal by sophomore Vanessa Narveson in the 74th minute. Twelve minutes later, teammate Taylor Legler added what ended up being the game's deciding goal.

Providing stout defense in the goal was junior keeper Paige Natzke who finished with four saves.
