FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe Cheesemakers' top two doubles teams came away with big wins, but the Cheesemakers fell to Fort Atkinson, 5-2, in Badger Conference girls tennis on Tuesday.
The No. 1 doubles team of Ashley Hermanson and Kelsey Erickson topped Fort Atkinson's Courtney Jacobson and Kerry Hartwick, 6-3, 6-1, and the No. 2 doubles team of Emily Grossen and Gwen Sutter defeated Laura Olsen and Rhea Bradley, 6-2, 6-3.
The Blackhawks captured No. 3 doubles as Cassie Rains and Allyson Nysted defeated Monroe's Taylor Weis and McKenzie Bruce, 6-4, 6-4.
Fort Atkinson swept all four singles matches as No. 1 singles player Kristin McArdle fell to Fort Atkinson's Leah Dahl, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 2 singles player Ellie Shuda was defeated by Olivia Hartwick, 6-0, 6-2.
At No. 3 singles, Kiera Berger lost to Lexie Weigand 6-0, 6-0, and Lily Priewe dropped a tough, two-hour match at No. 4 singles to Ellen Ringle, 6-2, 6-4.
"Our girls played tough against them and gave all they had, but came up short in the end," said Monroe head coach Stephanie Miller.
"Kristin, Ellie, and Kiera have all played the same Fort girls several times in the past two years and each time they step up and play a bit better, but we have never pulled away wins in one to three singles."
The Cheesemakers will take on another tough Badger Conference opponent Thursday when they host Madison Edgewood.
