LODI - The Monroe girls soccer team learned that no lead is safe playing in a strong wind Monday night.

Monroe jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Lodi exploded for five goals going with the wind in the second half to beat the Cheesemakers 5-4 in the season opener.

"Certainly, the wind was a big factor in the game," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "We played with the wind in the first half and we had the advantage. They played with the wind in the second half and they had the advantage.

"I think we were thinking we are up 3-0 and we would be able to keep the lead. They (Lodi) came out determined."

Sophomore Vanessa Studer scored two goals to lead the Cheesemakers. She scored her first goal at 18 minutes, 33 seconds and sophomore Gabby Ludwig scored at 24:34 to give the Cheesemakers a

2-0 lead. Studer scored her second goal on an assist from Maddie Knutson at 28:12.

Knutson scored the only second-half goal for the Cheesemakers. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Wellnitz had seven saves.

"The first game is always hard to tell how it will turn out," O'Neill said. "We had some great passing from our midfielders. You want to see that in the first game. That was very positive."
