MADISON - What was previewed to be the match of the year Friday turned into a dud.
Both Monroe and Madison Edgewood came into the match undefeated in duals this spring, but Edgewood walked away with a 7-0 win.
"So much for the big showdown with Edgewood," Monroe head coach Jim Bartholf said. "They took it to us. They were ready to play us today, and we just showed up."
Lauri Juonela lost to Jack Cullen at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Carson Root fell in the second singles, 6-3, 6-3. No. 3 Matt Le lost 6-3, 6-1, and Eric Knudtson fell 7-5, 6-3, in the fourth singles.
"(Edgewood's) singles played well. It's not the result I thought would happen," Bartholf said.
Artem Beer and Jim Kundert lost in the No. 1 doubles match 6-3, 7-6. Pat Gellings and Garrett Tschanz fell in the second doubles 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 and Mark Hoesly and Dan Becker fell 6-0, 7-6.
Monroe's junior-varsity team lost 10-3.
