MONROE - Junior Kylea Ambrose had a big day at the plate to lead Monroe softball to a 10-0 five-inning win over Highland Park, Ill. in a three-team round robin tournament Friday at Twining Park.
Ambrose went 2-for-2 with four RBI to propel the Cheesemakers to the win. With the win, Monroe improves to 3-0, 2-0 Badger South.
"We struck the ball well early," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "We hit two home runs foul."
The Cheesemakers pounded out 11 hits in five innings. Monroe junior Natalie Dillon led off with a bunt single in the first inning. Junior teammate Brooke Adams was hit by a pitch and senior Kari Jordan walked. Ambrose then crushed a two-run double to left center. Monroe sophomore Carly Upmann also delivered a two-run double to give the Cheesemakers a 4-0 lead.
Upmann went 2-for-3 with three RBI. She also pitched two shutout innings and retired six straight batters. Dillon started on the mound and she pitched three innings. She gave up just one hit and struck out four.
"Carly showed that she is a good No. 2 pitcher," Buvid said.
The Cheesemakers extended their lead with a four-run second. Ambrose had her second two-run double to give the Cheesemakers a 6-0 lead. Monroe junior Hannah Vetterli, who went 2-for-3, had an RBI single and Upmann had an RBI single to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 8-0 lead. The Cheesemakers had 16 players bat in the game.
Monroe will play Spencer at noon today and then will play Pearl City, Ill. at 2 p.m. today at Twining Park in the tournament.
The Cheesemakers will play at Monona Grove Tuesday. The Silver Eagles are tioed with the Cheesemakers atop the Badger South.
"We want to win all the time, but we want to get some other players some at-bats," Buvid said. "Pearl City is probably better than us. Some of our players know their players because they play travel ball together. It will be good preparation for us (for Monona Grove)."
