MONROE - Three games, three nearly identical scores as the Cheesemakers lost to Monona Grove 21-25, 21-25, 20-25.
Teamwork was the strong point for Monroe (0-4 Badger South). Seniors Taylor Barrett and Savannah Koester had 11 and seven assists respectively but it wasn't enough to capture any of the closely contested sets.
"The first game we started really strong," Cheesemakers coach Danya Ward said. "We were talking and communicating well but we didn't have enough to pull it out in the end."
Barrett had 10 kills and Koester had nine for Monroe.
"We always do very well in tournament games," Ward said. "I would like to see the tournament attitude come out in our conference games."
Albany 3, Pec 1
ALBANY - Albany coach Connie Wunschel made the decision to use a libero even though the Comets had not practiced the set-up in practice.
Albany junior Lyndsay Hoesly was used at libero and Alexis Kennedy stepped into a middle hitting role due to an injury and the Comets picked up their first conference win 26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 25-17 over Pecatonica.
Wunschel liked the way Hoesly stepped in at libero.
"She's not afraid to attack the ball," Wunschel said. That is why I threw her in there and as a libero she can sub in for anyone in the back row and it doesn't count against your substitutions."
Kennedy had nine kills stepping in at middle hitter Liz Schroeder who suffered a sprained ankle at the Brodhead Invitational last weekend.
"It was a very important win for us," Wunschel said. "We came back in every game. Every game was tight."
Albany senior Ashlee Berra had 13 blocks and four aces. Albany's Felicia Caldwell had 14 digs and senior Felicia Conley added nine assists.
"We had the lead in the first two games and let it slip away from us," Pecatonica coach Tori Leonard said. "Going into the fourth set, I think we were a little tired in the end."
Pecatonica's Britt Miller had nine kills and two blocks. Clara Moen had 10 aces and 13 assists and senior Emily Gruenenfelder added 23 digs. With the loss, Pecatonica drops to 0-10, 0-6.
