OREGON - Monroe track coach Curt Miller is taking a different approach to Badger South Conference dual meets this year.
This is the first year that conference dual meets won't be factored into the final Badger South standings.
"The dual meet records and points don't matter," Miller said. "We know that and every coach in the conference knows that. This is the type of meet where we want to learn about some athletes. We are not trying to maximize points."
The Monroe boys track team had several athletes step up, including senior Cody Oudinot and junior A.J. Cifuentes, to lead the Cheesemakers to a 79-67 victory over Oregon on Tuesday. The Oregon girls outbeat the Cheesemakers 101-45.
Oudinot won the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 40.3 seconds. He teamed with David Kelly, Jake Hirsbrunner and Skyler Stingley to win the 1,600 relay (3:33.6).
Cifuentes won the 3,200 in 10:54.4 and senior Luke Peterson took the 800 (2:07.2). Sophomore Grant Keith won the pole vault (11 feet) and classmate Dakota Phillips took first in the 100 (11.8). Senior Matt Bush won the 400 (:51.8), sophomore Mike Graham won the shot put (40-10) and Stingley took the 300 hurdles (42.9).
The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Jon Becker, Bryan Schroeder, Kyle Olson and Seth Calaway won in 46.1 seconds.
The Monroe girls swept the top two spots in the 100 hurdles and pole vault. Freshman Corlissa Robertson finished first in the 100 hurdles (18.5) and sophomore Nicole Witt took second (18.9). Witt won the 300 hurdles (54.4). Sophomore Tre Voegeli won the pole vault (8-6) and senior Maria Pecora was second (8-0).
Sophomore Taylor Barrett took the top spot in the high jump (5-0) and junior Tabitha Egli won the shot put (29-7 1/2). Junior Lizzy Dale won the 400 (1:06) and freshman Alyssa Dale took second in the 800 (2:38.1).
"We talked about stepping up and competing at a higher level," Miller said. "I think the highlight of the meet was the Dale sisters stepping up."
Miller isn't concerned with the score of the dual meet.
"Neither team is trying to set it up to maximize their points," he said. "We just want to keep kids fresh and healthy."
