FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe boys tennis team won three singles matches to cruise to a 5-2 dual match win over Fort Atkinson Thursday.

Monroe senior David Shon at No. 1 singles defeated Fort Atkinson's Willy Lemke 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore teammate Silas Setterstrom at No. 2 singles beat Fort Atkinson junior Justin Gdaniec 6-3, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Monroe senior Zach Hendrickson beat Fort Atkinson's Ryan Baker 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Monroe (4-2, 1-0 Badger South) has now won four straight dual matches.

"It was great to start off the Badger South season with a win and extend our overall dual winning streak to four matches," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said.

Saugstad complimented Setterstrom on his play against Gdaniec who has had success against the Cheesemakers in previous matches.

"Silas neutralized his opponent's game plan with some nice lobs and consistent play," Saugstad said. "That was a big conference win for Silas."

The Cheesemakers' No. 1 senior doubles team of Kevin Noriega and Matt Monahan defeated Fort Atkinson's Luis Janillo and Collin Baker 6-1, 6-1. Monroe senior Jeremy Miller and sophomore Kody Althaus outlasted Fort Atkinson's Doni Lumani and Ryan McCarthy to win a three-set match, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3.

Noriega and Monahan at No. 1 doubles have won five straight matches. Miller and Althaus overcame a slow start to bounce back to win.

"They (Miller and Althaus) were missing some shots at the start and Fort Atkinson was using a good strategy," Saugstad said. "Once Kody and Jeremy figured out a counter-strategy, they started to play much better. Jeremy and Kody are at their best when they are flying around the court and putting balls away at the net, and that is what they started doing in the second and third set."

Monroe has a big week starting Monday when the Cheesemakers will begin a stretch of eight matches in eight days including four Badger South Conference matches.

"A lot will be determined regarding our position in the conference and seeding," Saugstad said. "It's going to be a big challenge for the boys and I'm looking forward to watching them step up and rise to the occasion."
