MONROE - Terri Holmes has enjoyed the challenge of wrestling since she was in kindergarten.
Holmes, a Monroe sophomore wrestling at 120 pounds, faced a big challenge as she trailed Oregon's Noah Englehart 7-2 in the second period. However, she stormed back scoring on an escape and takedown with 38 seconds left to cap a 10-9 comeback win. Holmes' thrilling win was one of the closest matches Tuesday night as the Cheesemakers knocked off Oregon 59-18 in the home opener.
"I knew I had to do it for the team and get the points," Holmes said. "I didn't think I would make it. I had to push through. I enjoy the competition and the challenge the most."
Monroe (1-0 Badger South) won eight of the nine matches wrestled and posted five pins en route to the victory.
"They all wrestled well," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "We kind of knew this was a match that we could win. We had a goal of winning all the matches. We came up just a little bit short."
Jackson wasn't surprised by Holmes' comeback, since she defeated Englehart last year.
"I told her if she stayed in good position, she would win," Jackson said. "Terri has been sick and hasn't had a whole lot of practice to get in shape. I give her credit for going out there and wrestling the whole six minutes to pull out the win."
The Cheesemakers received pins from freshman McKenzy Foley (126), senior Jesse Keizer (132), Aaron Hesgard (138), junior Austin Minder (195) and junior heavyweight Brett Zimmerman. Minder pinned Oregon's Tristan Williams in 1 minute, 11 seconds and Zimmerman pinned Jake Kluever in 2:30 to give the Cheesemakers a 27-0 lead. After the Cheesemakers forfeited at 106 and 113, Foley later came through with a pin of Oregon's Cristian Crespo in 1:02 and Keizer pinned Omar Sacramento in 1:55 to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 42-12 lead. Hesgard pinned Kurt Stetzer in 3:50 and senior Kevin Klopfenstein (145) won with a 17-0 technical fall over James Trevino. Senior Trevor Gorr (220) and junior Ryan Hughes (160) each picked up wins by forfeit.
"I had a lot of nerves, even though I wrestled pretty decent," said Hesgard, a state qualifiers last year. "I just wanted our team to win and kick off the season in the right way."
Hesgard has plans of making a run to state again.
"One of my goals is to get on the podium and get a medal," he said "So I have something to look back on and know I was pretty decent in high school."
Monroe sophomore Cody Wolf was pinned by William Frauchiger in 3:17.
"Cody is a young wrestler," Jackson said. "I told him he will get better and he will beat that kid later in the year when he gets more experience. Cody has come miles and miles with his technique."
Monroe will wrestle at the Belleville tournament on Saturday and host Waunakee instead of Madison Edgewood on Dec. 11. Jackson said Edgewood doesn't have a wrestling team this year. He's aware the matches will get tougher in the Badger South Conference, but Jackson likes the way his wrestlers have started.
"They know the matches will get tougher," Jackson said. "That is why we go to the tough individual tournaments. We have goals to win those matches."
