Cheese take part at Bi-State

LA CROSSE - Two Cheesemakers went 3-1 during the first day of the Bi-State Classic at La Crosse Wednesday and three others won two matches.

Sophomore Kevin Klopfenstein was 3-1 in the 125-pound division, picking up two wins via pin and another on an 8-2 decision. Klopfenstein's only loss came to Wausau West's Nate Hettinga in the third round 8-0.

Teammate Aaron Hesgard (119) also went 3-1, picking up a pin, an 8-0 major decision and a 16-1 technical fall. Hudson's Gordon Johnson knocked off Hesgard in the third round by technical fall 19-1.

Dylan Schwitz (152) was 2-1 on the day, picking up two major decision wins. Schwitz received a bye in the first round but fell to Arcadia's Cadyn McKeeth 13-5 in the fourth round.

Nick Walker (285) also went 2-1. Walker pinned Kickapoo-LaFarge's Dylon Anderson in 47 seconds and won by disqualification over Dodgeville's Jordan Uphoff in the third round. Walker also received a first-round bye and lost in the quarterfinal 8-0 to Austin Goergen of Caledonia-Houston-Spring Grove.

Ryan Hughes (160) was 2-2 after getting a bye in the first round. Hughes was pinned in both the first round and in the fourth round of the consolation bracket. Hughes did pick up pins in his other two matches.

Monroe is currently in eighth place in the Division 2 points standings at the two-day meet.

Mid-States Wrestling Classic

WHITEWATER - Pecatonica-Argyle's Ross Gilbertson was pinned by Kettle Moraine's Alex Cochrane in the third-place match of the heavyweight division on Wednesday. Gilbertson wrestled eight times during the two-day meet, including four matches Wednesday. Gilbertson received an injury default win in the consolation semifinals.

Overall, Gilbertson went 6-2 at the tournament with four pins.

Ian Sigg won his first match Wednesday in the third round of the consolation bracket at 189-pounds, pinning Jefferson's Devin Wild in 1:43. Delavan-Darien pinned Sigg in the next round in 3:22.

Chris James (130) lost his only match of the day by a 12-6 decision to Fort Atkinson's Cory Schuerman.

Ethan Averill (112) also fell in his only match in the third round of the consolation bracket. West Bend East's Turner Pruett pinned Averill in 2:32.

Pecatonica finished 29th in team points at the 44-team invitational. Freeport (Ill.) was 14th and Sugar River took 43rd.

Brodhead 42, Kenosha St. Joseph 31

The Cardinals benefitted from three forfeits and four pins to knock off St. Joseph Wednesday.

The two teams each took points in seven matches, and Brodhead was actually just 4-7 in matches wrestled.

However, the maximum points received (six) for each of the wins was the difference. Dylan Severson (285-pounds), Tyler Davis (215), Kramer Lewis (160) and Hunter Colden (152) each picked up pins for Brodhead.
