Cheese swings to fourth

MAZOMANIE - The Monroe volleyball team finished fourth place in a five-team Wisconsin Heights Invitational Saturday.

In a round-robin style tournament, Monroe went 1-3. Monroe defeated Boscobel 26-24, 25-19. Wisconsin Heights, the eventual tournament champion, beat the Cheesemakers 25-23, 25-14. Iowa-Grant then knocked off the Cheesemakers 25-11, 25-20. In Monroe's final match, Riverdale outlasted the Cheesemakers edging them 25-23, 24-26, 17-15.

"We played our best volleyball against Riverdale," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "Everything came together in this match and the girls fought tough. I'm so proud they were able to end the day with such great play. It was exciting to watch."

Monroe sophomore Sydney Mathiason had a team-high 18 kills for the tournament and two blocks. Senior teammate Hannah Vetterli notched six aces and eight kills. Monroe junior Alicia Kuester racked up 11 kills.

Monroe senior Paige Murphy dished out 38 assists and junior Hannah Neuenschwander had 21 assists. Junior teammate Lexi Hilliard had a team-best 17 digs and four aces, while Murphy added nine digs and Vetterli posted eight digs.
