MONROE - The Monroe baseball team continued to swing hot bats to earn a doubleheader split with Sauk Prairie on Saturday.
Monroe (3-4, 1-2 Badger South) knocked off Sauk Prairie 9-8 in the first game and lost a slugfest 10-9 to the Eagles in the second game.
In Game 1, Monroe junior Hunter Weckerly drew a walk-off walk to give the Cheesemakers the 9-8 win. Junior teammate Hogan Edwards went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Junior Isaac Allen went 2-for-2 with one RBI and junior Carter Sawdey was 2-for-5. Both senior Jaron Kuester and Weckerly each had two RBI.
Monroe's Brad Ripp started and pitched 52⁄3 innings. He gave up three earned runs on 11 hits. He struck out two and walked one. Edwards pitched 11⁄3 shutout innings in relief to get the win. He struck out two and walked oane.
"Right now with our 1 through six hitters, I would match them up with anyone," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "What they are doing with their approach is terrific. They are getting good counts in their favor and are doing damage."
In the second game, Sauk Prairie's Conner Leister hit a two-run triple in the sixth inning to lift the Eagles to a 10-9 win over the Cheesemakers.
The Cheesemakers used four pitchers in the game. Edwards started and pitched two shutout innings. He went out to start the third, but Huffman didn't like the way his warm-up pitches were going and went to senior Brent Edmunds.
"It looked like his arm was starting to get sore," Huffman said of Edwards. "We want him to come back and pitch on Thursday. We didn't want to risk an injury early in the season. There is no use in blowing his arm out at all."
Edmunds pitched 22⁄3 innings in relief and gave up five earned runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked three.
"We are trying to get some of our other guys experience on the mound," Huffman said. "We are definitely moving in the right direction."
Kuester went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the Cheesemakers. Edwards went 2-for-4 with one RBI and senior Garrett Gogin was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI.
Monroe will host Darlington in a non-conference game at 5 p.m. today.
