Cheese score another late win

MILTON - The Cheesemakers won their second straight game in dramatic fashion.

In Week 5 senior Jon Becker returned a punt for a touchdown in the final minute to beat Stoughton. On Friday, Becker struck again, scoring from 2 yards out with just 44 seconds left to lift Monroe 13-9 over Milton.

"You think back and three years ago and they beat us 61-0," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "Now we come out and we beat them on their own field on their homecoming. This one feels great. I'm proud of all the kids. We definitely have our goal in sight of making it to the playoffs. It's not something that has happened here in eight years."

The Cheesemakers drove 80-yards in 14-plays on the game-winning drive.

"It was a team effort," Miller said. "There were a lot of individuals who contributed to this."

Becker rushed for 107 yards on 27 carries and scored one touchdown. Barenklau completed 6 of 17 passes for 165 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Monroe senior Alex Dahlk, who had three catches for 113 yards and one touchdown, made a one-handed catch on the game-winning drive. Fellow senior Skyler Stingley also made a couple of catches.

"Alex Barenklau made some beautiful throws to set up that touchdown," Miller said.

Both teams squared off evenly against one another, and a Red Hawks field goal with just five seconds left in the second quarter made it 3-0 at halftime.

Milton struck again with a 5-yard touchdown run by Josh Kummer at the 7:51 mark in the third quarter, making it 9-0. The Cheesemakers finally scored late in the third when Barenklau connected with Dahlk on an 83-yard touchdown pass.

As the game unfolded, Monroe (2-4, 2-1) had one final chance, and Becker punched it in from near the goal line.

Milton (2-4, 1-3) collected 225 total yards of offense in the game, compared to Monroe's 222.

The Cheesemakers return home this week for a Homecoming game against Madison Edgewood (4-2, 3-1).

"We are just looking forward to playing Edgewood and playing to become playoff eligible," Miller said.
