WHITEWATER - Both the Monroe boys and girls track teams took part in the Wisconsin TFA Indoor Championships on Saturday.

Brett DeNure won the boys 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute, 59.9 seconds and Meaghan Tomasie-wicz broke the school's indoor pole vault record with a mark of 10 feet, 3 inches, earning third-place honors. Stephanie Wyss also finished in third place in the high jump, tying her all-time best mark with a leap of 5 feet.

"Both Meaghan and Stephanie had an outstanding day," girls track and field head coach Curt Miller said. "To place at an invitational of this caliber (90 schools) is a great accomplishment."

"The highlight of the day was Brett DeNure winning the 800," boys coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "His time not only gave him the victory, but also gives him the fastest 800 meter indoor time in the state of Wisconsin (right now). Brett actually wanted to run a little faster time, but winning the races makes up for that."

Hirsbrunner noted DeNure's strategy in the run. The standout senior stayed back in the pack for the first half of the race, then exploded. He was uncontested in the final 150 meters and pulled away from the field.

Both of the Monroe boys throwers, Nick Walker (10th place) and Mike Reed (14th), set personal bests at the meet. Walker threw his shot put 47-9 and Reed threw 47-6.5.

"It was satisfying to see Nick and Mike have such good throws. They are continually getting better and better. Our entire throwing crew has been working extremely hard," Hirsbrunner said.

Jeff Hill (seventh) had his personal best pole vault, clearing 13 feet. Hirsbrunner said it was the third best mark by any sophomore in Monroe history and 12th best in school history.

"Jeff Hill continues to go higher and higher into the sky. He works incredibly hard at this event and it is paying off. The sky is the limit for him," Hirsbrunner said.

Caleb Ahrens (fourth) set a personal best in the 55-meter high hurdles, finishing with a time of 8.7 seconds - a half-second faster than his personal best coming into the 2009 season.

"A half of a second in only 55 seconds is quite a bit. He will be fun to watch outside the 110 hurdle race," Hirsbrunner said.

Garrett Wyss (fifth) ran the 55 dash in 6.9 seconds. Michael Barrett finished tied for 10th in the high jump (5-10) and Tad Christen finished 13th in the triple jump (40-11.75).

Area schools

Both Darlington and Albany also were at the WTFA Invite.

Albany's Jake Lincicum finished in 16th place in the boys 800 run with a time of 2:04.87 and Jordan Mauerman (26th) lept 14-4 in the girls long jump.

Darlington's Jeff Reichling won the boys shot put with a throw of 55-1. The Redbirds' 1,600-meter girls relay team finished in 13th place with a time of 4:20.03 - just two-one hundreths of a second behind Kimberly for 12th place in the 37-team race.
