MILTON - The Cheesemakers picked up a 2-0 victory over Milton in Badger South softball play Thursday.
Sophomore pitcher Becca Armstrong held the Red Hawks to just two hits while striking out nine in seven innings.
"She pitched great. She pitched herself out of a couple of jams," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said of his pitcher, who also issued five walks.
Offensively, the Cheesemakers were led by freshmen Chandra McGuire and Ellie Grossen. McGuire, batting in the leadoff spot, was 3 for 4 and scored both runs.
In the third inning, McGuire doubled and stole third. Moments later, Grossen (2 for 3, double) hit an infield single that scored McGuire.
Again in the fifth, the two freshmen capitalized against Milton's defense. McGuire reached on a fielder's choice then proceeded to steal second and third with two outs. Grossen walked and Buvid called for a double-steal. Grossen slid in safely at second and McGuire scored uncontested.
"McGuire was a catalyst. Both Chandra and Ellie stole some bases and made things happen for us," said Buvid. "We played great as a team. We improved greatly from Tuesday."
Monroe (2-0) plays at the Watertown Invitational Saturday and travels to Fort Atkinson on April 12.
