MILTON - Milton tossed five no-hit innings against Monroe and the Cheesemakers trailed by three runs Thursday.
"We didn't play well defensively and it was looking bleak," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said.
Monroe rallied from a 4-1 deficit scoring three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to beat Milton 7-4.
"When you get down three runs and haven't had a hit yet, it's a big mountain to climb," Buvid said. "To the girls' credit, they found a way to get it done. The kids kept fighting."
With the win, Monroe, ranked No. 9 in the Division 2 Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association state poll, improves to 8-3, 7-1 Badger South. Monroe junior Hannah Vetterli went 2-for-3 and junior Kylea Ambrose was 2-for-4.
In the sixth, Monroe junior Natalie Dillon led off with a double. Senior Kari Jordan reached on an error. Ambrose delivered an RBI single to right field to cut the Red Hawks' lead to 4-2. Vetterli came through with an RBI single up the middle to score Jordan. Ambrose also scored the game-tying run on the play when a throw into the infield went into the dugout.
The Cheesemakers came back to win with a four-run seventh. Monroe freshman Alysha Witt reached on an error and junior Brooke Adams walked. Jordan then delivered a two-run double to give the Cheesemakers a 6-4 lead. Ambrose reached on an infield single and Vetterli drove in another run on an infield single.
Dillon pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up one earned run on four hits. She struck out three and walked two.
Monroe will play at Brodhead at 4:45 p.m. today.
