PRAIRIE DU SAC - The Monroe softball team rallied from a five-run deficit to come back to beat Sauk Prairie 10-6 in a non-conference game Monday.

Monroe sophomore Carly Upmann started at pitcher and gave up five earned runs on six hits in three innings. She allowed a pair of two-run home runs, while striking out two and walking one.

The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Monroe (10-3, 7-1 Badger South), ranked No. 9 in the Division 2 Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association state poll, battled back to tie the game with a three-run fifth.

"Her changeup was really good," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said of Upmann. "She struggled just a little bit. It was her rise ball that left in bad spots thigh high to waist high. She needs to have rise ball go where she needs it to go."

Monroe junior Natalie Dillon and senior Kari Jordan both walked. The Cheesemakers scored two runs on wild pitches and Cassidy Pivonka had a RBI single to score Kylea Ambrose to tie the game at 5.

The Cheesemakers took the lead with a three-run sixth. Monroe junior Hannah Vetterli, who went 2-for-3, singled to left. Freshman teammate Alysha Witt moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Dillon walked and Jordan delivered a two-run single to give the Cheesemakers a 7-5 lead. Jordan later scored on a bases-loaded walk to extend the Cheesemakers' lead to 8-5.

Dillon crushed a two-run home run in the seventh. Dillon pitched four innings and had up just one unearned run on two hits. She struck out eight and walked one. Ambrose finished 2-for-4 for the Cheesemakers.

The Cheesemakers committed five errors, but rallied to pull out the win.

"Sauk helped us in the fifth inning with some walks and wild pitches," Buvid said. "We feel pretty good about our offense. We wanted to give Natalie some innings to get her ready for Fort Atkinson."

Monroe hosts Fort Atkinson at 5 p.m. today at Twining Park. Monroe (7-1 Badger South) has a two-game lead in the conference over Fort Atkinson, Monona Grove and Stoughton each at 4-3.
