MADISON - The Monroe wrestling team opened the season with a 61-5 win Friday night over Madison East.

"The guys were hyped up and wrestled a bit sloppy, but they got the job done," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said. "This was a pretty good warm-up match to get the season started."

The Cheesemakers dominated the season opener against East by piling up seven pins - from freshman Jesse Keizer at 112 pounds, Kevin Klopfenstein (125), Caleb Rupnow (140), junior Dylan Schwitz (145), senior Mason Goff (152), senior Dillon Weckerly (171) and senior Josh Mayer (189).

Keizer pinned Madison East's Raul Ferandez in 49 seconds. Klopfenstein at 125 pinned Libasse Sarr in 2 minutes, 55 seconds. Rupnow at 140 pinned Antonio Cruz in 1:50 and Schwitz won by pin in 1:07. At 152, Goff pinned Rudy Hernandez in 56 seconds and Weckerly at 171 pinned Sean Dunn in 3:16. The final pin came at 189 from Mayer, who stuck Dhondup Tseizin in 1:55.

In the closest matches of the dual meet, junior heavyweight Nick Walker pulled out an 8-6 overtime win over Cody Schwitenberg and senior Cory Kundert (215) won in a major decision, 13-5, over Kyle Pierce.

The Cheesemakers wrestle today at the Reedsburg duals.

"The competition will be stepped up a notch there, and we will see where we really are," Jackson said.
